What do I bring?

Hat, sunscreen, towel, change of clothes, sunglasses, water bottle, plastic bag or dry bag, picnic lunch and rug

Do I need to book?

Yes. On weekends bookings are recommended as kayak hire may be cancelled if the weather conditions are unfavourable. On weekdays we operate on a booking only system, so bookings are essential.

What can I expect to see? What is the river like?

The departure point at Bundeena is a coastal bay with a stunning stretch of sandy beach (great for swimming). Venture further up the river into the National Park and you’ll leave civilization behind. Here the river takes on a new look with isolated creeks, mangrove ecosystems, secluded picnic spots, overhanging cliffs and of course the majestic touring trees of the National Park.

I have never kayaked before. Is this a problem?

No - just as long as you can swim and in reasonably fit condition then kayaking shouldn’t be a problem. You may also like to book into our Learn to Kayak Course where you will learn basic kayaking techniques and kayaking safety.

What is the best time of the day to go kayaking?
Usually it’s best to get an early start, as the wind has a tendency to pick up in the afternoon. Sometimes however it may be to your advantage to start later in the day depending on the tide times. Ask us for more details when you book.

What happens is the weather is bad?
All kayaking activities are cancelled when the wind strength is predicted to be greater than 25 knots. Kayaking activities go ahead as normal on rainy days.

How long is the river?

Although the Port Hacking is one of Sydney’s smaller waterway there is still plenty to explore. The river has 11sq-km water surface area and the distance of the longest paddling trip is 11km (this takes about 6 hours return).
Do I need to be able to swim?

Yes! All participants in any kayaking activities must be competent swimmers

Will I be provided with a safety vest?

Yes! And it is a condition of hire that you wear the vest at all times whilst on the water.

Do the kayaks have storage?

Yes! All of our touring kayaks have lots of storage space, but it’s a good idea to bring along a plastic glad bag or dry bag to put your gear in.

How long does it take to get to Bundeena?

Just under 1 hours drive from the centre of Sydney

Is there any accommodation in Bundeena?

Yes. Bundeena has many places to stay including a camping ground in the Royal National Park, beach front units, cottages and a 5-star exclusive b&b. Check out our Visit Bundeena page or www.bundeenainfo.com for more info.
What else can I do in Bundeena?
Enjoy some excellent coastal and bush walking trails, laze about or swim at one of the 4 beautiful beaches (all on Bundeena’s doorstep), have a picnic, go fishing, enjoy the cafe scene or visit the Bundeena RSL or Club Bundee.

Are there BBQ facilties in the Bonnie Vale picnic grounds?

Yes. Bonnie Vale is undergoing extensive renovation and when complete (in Oct 2007) will have gas bbq facilities and picnic tables.

Is there anywhere that I can go swimming/snorkelling?
Yes. The Bonnie Vale beach front (where Bundeena Kayaks is based) is a sheltered sandy beach, perfect territory for kiddies. The other beaches (Hordens, Gunyah and Jibbon) are also great for a dip. The rocky shorelines are also abounds in fish and invertebrate life - so be sure to pack your snorkelling gear!

What forms of payment are accepted?

We accept cash, credit card* (Mastercard and VISA) and Electronic Funds Transfers
* Payment by credit card attracts a 4% processing fee (to cover bank charges)

Where do I park my car? Do I need to pay the National Park entry fee?

You can either park you car in the Bonnie Vale picnic grounds car park (right next to Bundeena Kayaks) or outside the entry gate to Bonnie Vale and walk the short distance (about 150 metres) to our base. If you choose to park inside the picnic area you will need to pay the National Parks entry fee, if you park outside the gates there is no need to purchase a park entry ticket.
